This is a 4 days Volcanoes gorilla and golden monkey tour that will take you to Rwanda for a primate-watching experience. Volcanoes National Park is known for sheltering the largest number of mountain gorillas in Rwanda and having almost half of the remaining world’s mountain gorilla population. This Rwanda safari will enable you to meet the gorillas and golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, and you will also have a hike to Dian Fossey’s Tomb and visit Iby’iwacu cultural village for a cultural experience.

Detailed Itinerary for the 4 days Volcanoes, gorillas and golden monkeys tour

Day 1: Arrival  and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali Airport, you will meet up with our company representative, who will brief you about the safari, and afterwards, you will head to Volcanoes National Park. Will you have a stopover at Musanze Caves for a cultural experience? You will have views of bats hanging in the caves and also interact with the guides to tell you about the history of the Musanze caves.

The Musanze caves were once a refugee camp for the survivors of the 1994 Rwanda genocide and were also used as a crowning ground for the kings of Rwanda. The guide will drive you to a hotel for lunch and afterwards proceed to Volcanoes National Park. Upon arrival, you will check into a lodge, have dinner and retire to bed.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking and hike to Dian Fossey Tomb

You will have an early morning breakfast and then head to the park headquarters with your guide. At the headquarters, a park guide will brief you on the dos and don’ts for Rwanda gorilla trekking. After the briefing, you will embark on your trek. Depending on where the gorillas are located, the trek will take about 30 minutes to 7 hours. Once you find the gorillas, you will have an hour to observe and photograph them while following strict guidelines. Once you are done with gorilla trekking, you will go back to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.

In the late afternoon, you will be briefed on a hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb at the park headquarters by the guides. You will start the hike, which will reward you with several wildlife views, such as primates, birds and many more. You will meet the guides who will give you details about the achievements and conservation efforts of Dian Fossey. You will be able to see where she was laid to rest and also have views of the graves and remains of the mountain gorillas. You descend and head back to the lodge afterwards. You will have dinner at the lodge, and you will retire to bed.

Day 3: Golden monkey trekking and visit to Iby’iwacu Cultural Village

After breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing on the guidelines to follow while golden monkey trekking. It will take about 2 to 4 hours to find these playful creatures. After finding them, you will spend about 1 hour with them in their habitat, and you will observe them feed and play, among other things. After capturing pictures of them, you will head back to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch and relaxation, you will head out of the lodge, and you will head to Iby’iwacu cultural village for a cultural encounter with the Rwandese locals. You will learn about the traditions, customs and culture of the Rwandese. You will watch the locals dance their traditional dance and also prepare their local dishes. The guide will drive you back to the lodge to have dinner and retire to bed.

Day 4: Return to Kigali

Have an early morning breakfast at the lodge, check out of the lodge and embark on the journey back to Kigali. You will have lunch at a hotel in Kigali and afterwards visit Kimironko Market to buy souvenirs and also interact with the locals in the market. Later in the day, you will be dropped off at a hotel in Kigali.
