Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your journey begins with a warm welcome at Kigali International Airport, where your guide will be waiting to escort you to your vehicle. From here, you will start the drive to Volcanoes National Park, one of the most renowned places in the world for gorilla trekking. The drive will take about 2.5 to 3 hours. Arriving at your lodge, you will have time to relax and enjoy lunch as you prepare for the adventure ahead. In the evening, you will have a delicious dinner, and you will retire to bed.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Your day begins early with breakfast at the lodge before heading to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking. After the briefing, you will be assigned to a group, each with a ranger and guide to ensure safety and enhance your experience.

Depending on the location of the gorilla family, the trek could last about 1 to 7 hours. Once you encounter the gorillas, you will have an hour to observe them in their natural habitat. You will witness everything from playful young gorillas to dominant silverbacks. After your trek, return to your lodge for lunch and some relaxation. In the evening, enjoy dinner and rest.

Day 3: Dian Fossey Hike and Cultural Experience

After breakfast, you will head to the park’s headquarters once again for a different type of adventure, a hike to the Dian Fossey. The hike takes around 5 to 6 hours. Along the way, you will learn about the legendary primatologist Dian Fossey and her tireless efforts to protect the gorillas. The trail leads to her former research centre, where you will see her tomb and the remains of the research station.

In the afternoon, return to the lodge for lunch and take some time to relax before heading to Iby’iwacu cultural village. Here, you will enjoy a cultural experience, interacting with local Rwandan communities, learning about their traditions and witnessing the hospitality that is central to Rwandan culture. This could include a traditional dance performance, a visit to a local craft market or even a cooking demonstration. After the cultural experience, you will go back to the lodge for dinner and retire to bed

Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, you will embark on the drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. The drive will take around 4 to 5 hours. Arriving at Nyungwe, check into your lodge and relax. You will have lunch at the lodge, dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk

Start your day early with breakfast before setting off for your chimpanzee trekking experience. The trek begins at the park headquarters, where you will be briefed on the dos and don’ts of chimpanzee trekking. The trek takes about 30 minutes to 4 hours, and once you find the chimpanzees, you will have an hour to observe them. Afterwards, return to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will experience Nyungwe’s famous canopy walk. The canopy walk is one of the ways to see the forest’s biodiversity and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. You may even spot monkeys, birds, butterflies, among others. You will then go back to the lodge for dinner and your overnight stay.

Day 6: Nature Walk and Return to Kigali

On your final day, you will have a morning nature walk in Nyungwe Forest. This walk is an opportunity to enjoy views of the forest and see some of the wildlife species at close range, including monkeys, butterflies and a variety of plant species.

After your nature walk, return to your lodge for breakfast before starting your drive back to Kigali. The journey back will take approximately 5 hours, and depending on your flight time, you may have the chance to stop in Kigali for a brief city tour. Your 6 days Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe combo ends with your arrival at Kigali Airport, where you will be dropped off for your flight.
