Sabyinyo Gorilla Family

The Sabyinyo Gorilla Family

The Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda houses several habituated gorilla families, which allow visitors to come and stay in their forest. There is a story and a character of each troop, as well as the social dynamics of a troop. The Sabyinyo Gorilla Family is one of the most impressive and readily available ones. The family is characterised by strong silverback leadership and is rather small but steady in size, which has made the family popular among the trekkers who want to see the mountain gorillas of Rwanda with their own eyes.

The Sabyinyo Family Introduction.

The Sabyinyo family is called so because of the name of one of the extinct volcanoes on the Virunga range called Sabyinyo, which has a jagged edge on the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Kinyarwanda name of the mountain, Sabyinyo, translates to the teeth of an old man, which is the jagged top of the mountain. As the name suggests, the gorillas of this troop tend to wander about the lower sides of Mount Sabyinyo, hence more easily reachable compared to most other gorilla families in the park.

The Sabyinyo family is not big enough, like some of the bigger troops, yet, compensating for the lack of quantity, they compensate in charm. Tourists have been quoted saying that their tours to this family were serene, intimate and very fulfilling.

Leadership and Structure

The Sabyinyo family has the main silverback known as Guhonda, who is also one of the well-known silverbacks in the Virunga region. Guhonda is especially commendable in size; he is reckoned one of the heaviest and largest silverbacks that ever existed and weighed more than 220 kilograms (approximately 485 pounds). His imposing presence and power have made him a legendary man who protects and a tender leader.

The family is also close and quite stable under the leadership of Guhonda. The Sabyinyo family has been united, unlike some groups where rival silverbacks lead to frequent divisions within them. This moderation leads to the peaceful and laid-back demeanour that the trekkers usually observe whenever they visit them.

The family is usually characterised by multiple adult females, youths and babies. The mere availability of playful youngsters gives an animated touch to the encounters, as they are tumbling, climbing and interacting under the supervision of their mothers and Guhonda.

Responsibility and Characteristics.

The Sabyinyo family is renowned for loving nature. They are usually characterised as friendly and easy-going around people by the visitors. It is due to years of habituation that they accommodate trekkers without much ado, and they can be studied by people in proximity without experiencing stress or aggression.

The trek is usually characterised by infants and juveniles. Their mischievous exploits, swinging at bamboo, running to and fro in the bushes or trying to imitate the adults, are never tiring. We see mothers grooming and breastfeeding their babies, a very sweet expression of the strong family ties of the gorillas.

Guhonda, however, is always in the vicinity, and he has a protective eye on his troop. Though he is of imposing size, he is reputed to be a peaceful man. He makes the family and visitors feel safe in his presence and generates an environment of silent power and calmness.

Hiking to the Sabyinyo Family.

The relative simplicity of trekking to the Sabyinyo family is one of the reasons why they have become so popular. They tend to occur on the lower slopes of Mount Sabyinyo and the environs of the Volcanoes National Park. This reduces the length of the hike and its difficulty as opposed to other groups, such as the Karisimbi family, which involves a long hike.

The expedition starts at the headquarters of the Kinigi Park, where tourists get allocated gorilla families depending on their fitness and preferences. Tourists who want to have a shorter and less physically challenging walk are usually paired with the Sabyinyo family. Trekkers are then guided by experienced guides and rangers after a briefing to explore the farm land, bamboo forest and the juicy vegetation until the gorillas are found.

After the family has been located, visitors are given one of the most valuable hours with the family. Trekking in this period gives the trekkers a chance to silently note their actions, take photographs and relax in the privilege of being this close to these docile giants.

Conservation

Similar to other gorilla families in the Volcanoes National Park, the Sabyinyo troop is significant to conservation. They also aid in the creation of revenue, which is used to finance anti-poaching patrols, management of parks and communal development projects by bringing in tourists. Part of the price of the permits is directly given to the local communities, which motivates the people residing adjacent to the park to conserve gorillas and their habitats.

The fact that there is a well-known silverback such as Guhonda has also raised awareness of the need to conserve gorillas. Researchers, wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists are interested in stories about his leadership and size due to the worldwide movement to conserve these endangered primates.

How is the family unique?

The Sabyinyo family is the only one of the gorilla populations in Rwanda:

Leadership of Guhonda: He is the largest silverback known, and with his great, calm but dominant leadership, he renders the family paradigmatic.

Accessibility: They are also more accessible since their habitat is around the lower slopes, which would suit those who are not able to take the long walks.

Small Group Size:  These groups have fewer members compared to bigger groups, such as the Susa, and therefore the encounter is more intimate and personal.

Mellow temperament: They are easy-going, easy to approach and are best suited to first-time trekkers.

Scenic Location: Their location around the mountain Sabyinyo has beautiful views of the Virunga volcanoes.

Conclusion

A good example of conservation success in Rwanda is the Sabyinyo Gorilla Family and one of the most notable attractions in Volcanoes National Park. They are powerful and peaceful at the same time under the guidance of the powerful silverback Guhonda, and provide the visitors with the opportunity to observe gorilla life as it is the closest and most real.
