Rubavu District
Rubavu District in Rwanda.
One of the most picturesque and historic sites in Rwanda is Rubavu District, which is in the western part of the country on the northern side of Lake Kivu in the Western Province. Previously called Gisenyi, the Rubavu District is located on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and is directly opposite the Congolese town of Goma, and the two towns are bound by the Gisenyi-Goma border crossing.
The district is also very popular due to the casual lakeside environment, volcanic features, colonial history and strategic positioning close to the key national parks. As a tourist travelling to Rwanda and not only to Kigali City, the Rubavu District will be a rare mixture of tranquillity, culture and the accessibility of certain of the most iconic sites in the country.
Rubavu District: Geographical setting and landscape.
Rubavu District is located at the northwest border of Rwanda, about 160 kilometres by road from Kigali. The district borders on Lake Kivu, one of the Great Lakes in Africa, and is to the north influenced by the spectacular Virunga volcanic chain. This geographical location gives Rubavu a cooler climate than the eastern part of Rwanda, as it has misty mornings, green hills, and fertile volcanic soils.
Although they are across the border in the Democratic Republic of Congo, one can see Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira dominate the skyline and easily view them in some sections of Rubavu, particularly on clear days. The volcanic background, the lake, and the hills make the environment unique, and they differentiate Rubavu from all the districts in Rwanda.
Rubavu city and the tradition of Gisenyi.
The administrative and commercial centre of the district is still the town of Gisenyi (known today as Rubavu town). It was built in the colonial era and still has a trace of such history in its design and lakeside residential areas. The urban setting of the city in Kigali is fast-paced, but Rubavu town is slower in its rhythm, and therefore, most travellers choose to visit the town following a period of wildlife safaris or gorilla trekking.
The town is well advanced, as per the regional standards, and it has paved roads, restaurants, hotels, and cafes that serve the needs of the domestic and international visitors. It is also a key cross-border trade and travel hub in the Great Lakes since it is in Goma.
Accommodation and beach activities in Lake Kivu.
The tourism of the Rubavu District is centred on Lake Kivu. Rubavu has one of the most accessible and well-developed lake experiences in Rwanda on the shoreline. The Rubavu Beach, or Gisenyi Public Beach, is one of the few sandy beaches in the country and is frequented by locals and tourists to have fun swimming, riding boats, and also watching the sunset. The waters of the lake are very suitable for kayaking, paddleboarding, and enjoying relaxing boat cruises. On the shoreline, tourists will have a panoramic view of the hills and the faraway volcanoes, mostly during the golden hours of early morning and late afternoon.
The boat can take you to nearby islands like Nyamyumba and other small islands, where one can go to watch birds and have some quiet time. In this area, Lake Kivu is also reputed to be crocodile- and hippo-less, thus relatively safe, unlike many other African lakes.

Distance to Volcanoes National Park.
The location of Rubavu District is also one of its greatest benefits, as it is located close to the Volcanoes National Park, the best gorilla trekking site in Rwanda. The park is located about 45 kilometres northeast of the town of Rubavu, and the main gateway to the park is Musanze. A lot of the travellers prefer to spend the night at Rubavu before or after their Rwanda gorilla trekking because it has a more relaxed environment and the lakeside accommodation.
The road between Rubavu and Musanze is through a picturesque landscape, where terraced hills and cones of volcanic origin can be seen. This is what makes Rubavu a favourable destination for those who wish to have a combination of wildlife and how to spend time by the lake.
The local communities and cultural life.
Rubavu District comprises a multicultural community living around Lake Kivu that is directly related to the livelihood of people, farming, and cross-border trade. The lakeshore fishing villages give us an idea of what life on the lake was like and how people used to fish using traditional wooden boats in the early mornings.
The Ruvu town has local markets where fresh seafood and fish are available, along with handcrafted items, which provide one with a true idea of what life in Rwanda is like outside the capital. The interactions between cultures in this case are more informal and friendly, especially in lakeside neighbourhoods where tourism has been one of the components of the local economy.
Highways and roads to Rubavu District.
Rubavu District can be easily reached from Kigali through a well-developed road which goes through such towns as Muhanga, Karongi, and Rutsiro, depending on the route one chooses. It is usually a four- to five-hour trip by vehicle with a number of scenic endpoints having a gorgeous view of Lake Kivu. Buses run on the route between Kigali and Rubavu every day, so the district is available to low-end tourists. To the ones who are already in the Western Province, Rubavu is also good to go directly to the Karongi and Nyamasheke districts and thus able to explore the wider Lake Kivu area.
Rubavu is also an ideal transit place where travellers who would be entering/heading out of Rwanda via the Gisenyi-Goma border can stop; however, any cross-border movement needs to be assisted by valid visas and the maintenance of immigration protocols.
Hotel and tourist services in Rubavu.
One of the best hospitality industries outside Kigali is found in Rubavu District. There are also various accommodation facilities along the lakeshore, such as established lakeside resorts and mid-range hotels, as well as smaller guesthouses. Most of the properties have direct lake views, their own beach, and restaurants, which are ideal when people are staying for leisure.
In Rubavu, there are restaurants that focus on fresh fish in Lake Kivu as well as Rwandan and foreign cuisines. Tour operators, car hire, boat tour operators and various other visitor services are easily available, especially along the Gisenyi region.
When to visit Rubavu District.
Rubavu District is a destination that tourists can visit all year round, though the best seasons to visit Rwanda are during the dry seasons between June and September and between December and February. These months are more pleasant on the lake, and the road networks are in perfect condition to travel to other attractions in the area, such as Volcanoes National Park. It has a rainy season, March through May and October through November, which produces greener scenery and fewer visitors, which may interest vacationers who want a more tranquil setting.
The reasons why Rubavu District should be on your itinerary list in Rwanda.
Rubavu District is one of the destinations that offer relaxation, nature and location. Its lakeside location on Lake Kivu, its location near the gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and its rich regional flavour make it a splendid addition to any trip itinerary in Rwanda. As a base for wildlife escapades, an in-between-destinations stop, or a standalone recreational retreat, Rubavu provides the traveller with an opportunity to have an alternative feel of Rwanda.
