One of the most picturesque and historic sites in Rwanda is Rubavu District, which is in the western part of the country on the northern side of Lake Kivu in the Western Province. Previously called Gisenyi, the Rubavu District is located on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and is directly opposite the Congolese town of Goma, and the two towns are bound by the Gisenyi-Goma border crossing.

It is usually a four- to five-hour trip by vehicle with a number of scenic endpoints having a gorgeous view of Lake Kivu. Buses run on the route between Kigali and Rubavu every day, so the district is available to low-end tourists. To the ones who are already in the Western Province, Rubavu is also good to go directly to the Karongi and Nyamasheke districts and thus able to explore the wider Lake Kivu area.

Rubavu is also an ideal transit place where travellers who would be entering/heading out of Rwanda via the Gisenyi-Goma border can stop; however, any cross-border movement needs to be assisted by valid visas and the maintenance of immigration protocols.

One of the best hospitality industries outside Kigali is found in Rubavu District.
