3 days Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda
3 days of gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: Book for the 3 days Rwanda gorilla trekking and get to encounter these majestic and endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Day 1: pickup, city tour and transfer to the park
Volcanoes National Park is 104 km away from Kigali. Because of the spending limit imposed by the Rwandan government, it takes approximately 3 hours’ drive from the airport to the Volcanoes National Park.
On arrival at the airport, our driver guide will take care of all your logistics and onward transfer to the Parc National des Volcans. Dinner and overnight stay at Tinoreza Volcanoes Eco Lodge, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, or Gorilla Solution Lodge.
Day 2: gorilla trekking
At 4:30 am, the safari driver guide will pick you up and drive off to the park. It’s a 2-hour drive to get to the Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri, which is a habitat for the endangered mountain gorillas.
At exactly 7:30 am, we move to the park’s headquarters in Kinigi village, where you are briefed by the rangers about the rules and regulations for gorilla trekking before you head off to the jungle. The trek can last from an hour to six hours, depending on the gorilla movements, but for your case, since you will be having a flight on the same day, we will recommend a nearby family that is easy to trek to, though the trek is strenuous but very rewarding at the end. You will be given an hour with a gorilla to take as many pictures of your choice, and later drive back to the airport for your flight with an en route lunch along the way.
Day 3: cultural & community visit/golden monkey trekking
Undertake a community walk to the Iby’iwacu cultural village. The traditional dances, poems, and dress code in this place are quite memorable. Alternatively, you can choose to return to the jungles of the park, but this time to track the endangered and beautiful golden monkeys.

Return to the lodge for a hot lunch and then transfer to Kigali for a scheduled return flight.

10 habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park;
- Titus is named after a silverback known by the name
- Susa A, with 33 members, was the group Dian Fossey researched about from 1967 to 1985 and known for two playful twins
- Byishimo and Impano; Karisimbi (Susa B): This one splits from the Susa A group and roams the higher altitude (4507 metres) of the Karisimbi volcanoes and is only ideal for great hikers.
- The Amahoro group (in the Kinyarwanda language) refers to peacefulness and congeniality. Composed of 18 members, they live on the slopes of Mt Bisoke, and thus, it is a bit strenuous to hike.
- The Umubano group (with 13 members) broke away from another family. Ubumwe has two silverbacks living together, and this is what it suggests.
- Sabyinyo group (13 members) lives on the slopes of Mt Sabyinyo and is famous for its 3 days Rwanda gorilla tour
- The Agashya group, named after its leading silverbacks, stays closer to the Sabyinyo group at the Mt Sabyinyo slopes.
- Kwitondo, with 23 members, is a migrant group from DRCongo’s Virunga National Park and thus keeps marauding in the jungles between Mt Muhabura.
- The Hirwa group, formed in 2006 by members from the Sabyinyo and Agashya groups, is composed of 3 silverbacks and keeps roaming in the jungle on the Karisimbi slopes, which takes it high. Unpredictable and hard to track.
- Ugenda group (Kinyarwanda) means “on the move” and keeps roaming in different places around Mt Karisimbi.
Finally, the Bwenge group, formed as early as 2007 by a man called Bwenge, occupies the slopes of Karusoke volcano between the mountains Karisimbi and Bisoke. This group is the one that featured in “Gorilla in the Mist”.
